The Grill Scouts BBQ team was formed in 2010 by three Girl Scouts working towards the most prestigious achievement in scouting, the Gold Award.

Their Girl Scout culminating project was a multi-track festival, that centered on a food drive for Island Harvest. The event took place amidst a NY State BBQ Championship, which the girls entered.

Led by team member Ashton Saber, the Girl Scouts competed against an impressive field of experienced pitmasters and State Champions. Shocking everyone, they won first place ribs and fourth place chicken.

Later that year, Ashton Saber assisted acclaimed chef Tom Schaudel as they competed in a grilling competition at another New York State Championship. They took first place in the grilling category.

In spite of monsoon like weather that played havoc with pit temps and left equipment strewn about like toys after a two year old's tantrum, the Grill Scouts took second place in the chili contest at Williepallooza.

The Grill Scouts returned in August to the Battle of the BBQ Brethren, a NY State Championship, where they took fourth place in the Chef's Choice category with their Lobster Risotto with Truffle Oil.

In September, the Grill Scouts entered a rib cook-off on Long Island where the judges awarded them third place for their spare ribs with apple powder rub. Later that month, they entered a people's choice chili cook-off against a large field of competitors and took 6th place.

In April of 2012, the Grill Scouts participated in the NY State BBQ Championships in Brentwood, Long Island and won second place chili in a large and competitive field. We also helped to raise hundreds of pounds of food for those in need. Here is a letter from the soup kitchen's Food Coordinator.

On behalf of the Gerald J Ryan Outreach Center and The Mercy Inn Soup Kitchen than you all so much for the food you were able to donate to us this weekend

The Gerald J Ryan Outreach Center was destroyed over 4 years ago by a fire started by an arsonists we are still in the process of rebuilding. How ever the fire did not stop us from serving over 500 families a week we are the largest Outreach on Long Island in one of the poorest neighborhoods.

The Mercy Inn soup kitchen serves a hot lunch to 70-120 people Monday to Friday from 1200 until 1pm If is was not for donations like this from groups like you both places would have a real problem.
